Since the "new" browser (IE 9) is out, is it now possible
to make the (64 bit version) the default in Win 7 ?
If so how do you make it the default?

Thanks

Hi,
This is a nice quest.
If you go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab.
It clearly states that IE x64 cannot be set as the default browser.
Let's see if someone can defeat MSFT.

The question was " Can I make the 64 bit version default?"

Not funny. On a Windows 64bit system both IE 32bit and IE 64bit are
installed but only the IE 32bit can be the default.

And maybe there is a good reason to have both versions, for instance, we still don't have a 64 bit version of Adobe Flash... I too would love to dump the 32 bit browser but I cannot otherwise I would lose the capability to see the full content of some websites.

Hi, Kue2.

Yes, it's possible to make 64-bit IE the default. But I'm not sure it's a
good idea - at least, not until Adobe makes its Flash Player work in 64-bit
Windows.

The easy way is to create an icon that points to C:\Program
Files\iexplore.exe, rather than to C:\Program Files (x86)\iexplore.exe. Pin
this icon for the 64-bit version to your Taskbar so that you'll get 64-bit
IE when you click there.

Then edit the line in your Start Menu to say "Internet Explorer (32-bit)",
so that you can quickly run the 32-bit when you want/need to - such as to
watch a video. After that, when 64-bit IE stalls on a news or other video,
just highlight the URL in the Address Bar, Copy it, then start 32-bit IE and
Paste the URL there. Clumsy, and takes a few seconds, but it works. (You
know, of course, that when IE offers to update the Flash Player, it's
pointless to say, "Yes, go ahead" - because that means you're in 64-bit IE
and the player won't install, even after it goes through the motions.)

I did find the key in the Registry and deleted the "(x86)" from the command
to call IE, but I've forgotten just where it is and I can't find it now.
(Maybe it's this one: HKCR\Applications\iexplore.exe\shell\open\command,
but I haven't tested it to see. And there are several other instances of
"\iexplore" in the Registry, some with x86 and some without.) It turned out
to be more bother than the new-icon-in-the-Taskbar method. Every time I
clicked on a link - like in a newsgroup message pointing to a YouTube clip -
it would open in IE x64 and I would have to then open IE x86 manually and
transfer the link. And if that page linked to another, I'd have to repeat
the process.

Let us all know if you find the answer, Hugh.

I would have thought that was the perfect reason for making IE 64 the
default if possible.

One wonders why MS bothers to point to a "specific" 64-bit download when
you get both anyway! I couldn't understand why the download was so big
and took so long to install. Now I know why - two programs instead of one.
