IE Closes when trying to Install Updates

I went to updates.microsoft.com and let the system check my computer for
needed updates. It came back and said there were 7. I clicked the button to
install the updates. Nothing happened for about 10-15 seconds and then I
received the following message:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience.

I have tried several times and this keeps happening. I am running XP Pro,
with SP2 and IE 6. I believe there is a problem with my SP2 installation,
because I have 2 programs that I have tried to download on my computer that
will not work. They are AVG and Skype and both have said that I need to have
SP2 Installed in order to work. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I
would greatly appreciate it. I do have both the data report information or
Error Signature from the IE Closing message and the technical information
about the error report if they are needed. If I can avoid having to take my
computer in for service, that would be most desirable. Thank you in advance
for any help.

Did you only recently install SP2?

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=37919).

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

No, SP2 was installed a while ago. I have been having problems for quite
awhile but have never had nor taken the time to try and do anything about it.
It has become enought of a nuisance that I now need to so something. Thank
you for your response, but I am a newbie when it comes to diagnosing and
fixing computer problems. I'm afraid your suggestions are beyond me at this
time. I will try to follow them though and if I get stuck I will let you
know. Once suggestion someone made was to uninstall SP2 altogether, but I am
afraid to do that for fear that I could really screw something up and then my
programs that do run wouldn't. I just don't know enough to be confident in
doing that. Thanks for your help.

I don't think SP2 has anything to do with your problem and would NOT
recommend uninstalling it...nor would I recommend attempting to install SP3
with the machine in its current state.

Good luck.
