Since installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows
XP (KB912812) flash buttons aren't displaying properly in IE - I get a frame
around the buttons when I hover the mouse over, then I have to double click
to make them work - any pearls of wisdom?

Hi,

Microsoft had to do this to to be in compliance with the Eolas
Technologies patent verdict, more about this here:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759...119TX1K0000594

To "undo" this effect, you can install the KB917425 update ("Internet
Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch"). More information and download
link for KB917425 is to be found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425

Note that Microsoft have planned an IE Cumulative security update in
June 2006 that will overwrite and disable this ActiveX compatibility
patch.

What a nightmare!!!

Thanks Torgeir - that explains what's going on, I'm just going to have to
rethink the design of my web site now that visitors aren't going to get the
same 'user experience' anymore

So, since Microsoft is planning a new update in June that will overwrite this
problem patch, will all computers be able to view flash components normally
again?

As a web designer, I feel this hurts many websites that use flash and I have
had a few clients complain about it already.

You helped out with the new update, but unfortunately it does not help my
clients. I appreciate your help and hopefully Microsoft will fix this
problem soon.

No, the reverse is true. The June update will disable the present optional
end-user temporary compatability patch that restores the original treatment
of ActiveX controls: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425 . So after the
June update, the need to click to activate ActiveX controls will become
permanent and unavoidable.

Microsoft and other vendors published many months ago, in preparation for
this change, what web designers and publishers should do to make their pages
work normally again. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/ieupdate/

You should blame the legal action from Eolas Technologies, not Microsoft.
This was not a change that Microsoft or any web designer wished to make,
only the patent action forced it.
