IE does not work after Windows Updates

I have XP SP3 with IE6
After installng Windows updates, IE6 does not work properly.
It will start OK from the Run dialog. And entering a site address works OK.
But it will not start from a shortcut direct to a site.
It appears, then there is a delay, then a second IE window appears.
But there is no connection to the site.
These windows are activated avery few seconds and so keep appearing on top
when trying to do other things.
It is hard to close them, they hang sometimes and need to use task manager
end process
When I system restore back to before the updates, all is well.
Strangely ,the updates are Office updates
950380
945432
Office SP3

Which firewall is being used ?
Does IE function from it's icon on the Desktop/QuickLaunch/etc ?

>> But it will not start from a shortcut direct to a site.

Shortcut on a web page, desktop, etc ?

Were all Norton applications CLOSED prior to installing WinXP SP3?

I am having the same problem. About half of the time I go and click on any
of the desktop link, quicklaunch link, or Windows Update under Start menu IE
6 does not launch at all. The other half of the time it launches with no
problems at all. But the other times it doesn't, I can click I can double
click still nothing. Another thing I have found is when I do the Three
Finger for the shutdown box, I find of course no running programs but under
processes there can be anywhere from ten to fifeteen iexplorer processes
running. Even though I have not even seen one window. Now and then if I end
task all of these processes then IE will launch when clicked. At least once
while I was at least half way though end tasking IE all of a sudden popped up
and fully loaded my home page.

What "same problem"?

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

I am not sure about the timing of KB945432 installation.

When I installed SP3, the problem went away intially, then returned.

Which Norton product is installed ? I'd be willing to bet my life that
the shortcut issues are directly related to this so-called 'product'
actively monitoring the system when SP3 was installed.

NAV 2005 including firewall

I dont think it is Norton as I have tried going back a few months with
Ghost, disconnect intenet, turning off the firewall and AV, then installing
SP3.
It worked OK for a day or so, then same problem.
I have sent a Hijack this Log to Castlecops and will await their view before
trying anything else.

IIRC, NAV 2005 is no longer supported. I'm too lazy|smart to attempt a
search of Symantec's 'knowledge base'.
If you uninstall SP3, then uninstall NAV 2005, use Symantec's removal
tool to get rid of ALL remnants of NAV, and then run sfc /scannow, you
*may* have a healthy XP.
There are free AVs that are compatible with Windows and will protect the
system. Avast and Antivir are two of them.

No Symantec product designed for Home use is compatible with Windows.
None.
