IE freezes when going to Windows Update!

Ever since I reverted my WindowsXP installation from SP2 back to SP1 (since
SP2 isn't compatible with HaloPC), I have not been able to access Windows
Update. The automatic updates icon never appears in the system tray, and when
I attempt to access www.windowsupdate.com or windowsupdate.microsoft.com,
Internet Explorer freezes and I must close it through the Task Manager.
However, I CAN access these URLs using Firefox, so I know it is not a DNS
issue.

I am running AVG antivirus with the latest definitions and have detected no
viruses. Also I check for spyware frequently and run ZoneAlarm for my
firewall (yes I've tried accessing WU with the firewall closed).

Any ideas?

More importantly, is wuauclt.exe ever started and left running for a while?

That is only proof if you are using Firefox with IE6's User-Agent.
Otherwise you won't be getting the redirects that IE6 would be getting.

What clues are you getting in your logs?

You might try to Run...

wuauclt.exe /detectnow

and see what log messages that generates.
