IE goes to WU instead of home page when opened!

I seldom use IE but I opened it from the quick launch section of the taskbar
a few minutes ago and, instead of going to my home page, it went to WU and I
was instantly presented with a download box for the latest WU software. I
have no WU software on this computer and don't want any. I declined the
download and shut down IE. I have not reopened it because it might go there
again instead of to my home page. Luckily, I use Firefox/SeaMonkey 90% of
the time.

I have not used WU in YEARS (I get all patches and other needed updates
manually from Microsoft download site or by using Windiz for Firefox). I
have Automatic Updating and BITS disabled.

Why would IE go to WU on its own for NO REASON? Has MS hijacked my home
page? Is this Microsoft's way of irritating those of us who have refused to
install the WGA Notification Tool? (I have a legit copy of XP Pro and I am
not about to install that tool).

Scroll down to "R0, R1, R2, R3 - IE Start & Search Pages": read.
Scroll back up. In the Navigation box click on -Downloads-
-> Download "HijackThis.exe" from one of the several places.
Save it, run it, examine the results. If in doubt, select a forum.

The wonderful folks who bring you MicroSoft products SEEM to try to change
the home page periodically.

I get it about evey 4-6 weeks, and my ASW programs catch it, and I decline.
Just change your home page to something else.

Oh, wait, I forgot.

They never do anything like that.
Nor do they change the settings on your computer and force WGA on you as a
"critical update" when you've set to "advise" only.

Gotta remember the "company line" here.

Have a look into the Internet Options under "Advanced" to check,
whether the option to "Automatically check for updates for IE"
(or similar) is activated.

Bye,

That was checked and I had it unchecked. Something checked it. I suspect
Office 2007 beta. It has changed a bunch of stuff in IE.

I'm familiar with HijackThis. I ran it earlier. Saw nothing disturbing.
