Despite having the latest IE version and SP installed I still get to see the
placeholders and text version of the webpage. It appears that the page does
not get loaded completely since it cannot find an object it's looking for.

Is there a way to resolve this?

Be specific on which page this is, and also on your version / edition of Windows !
WindowsUpdate website ??
Windows 2000 or Windows XP or Server 2003 or ???

If Windows Update site, did you disable scripting or ActiveX ? Be sure those are enabled --- at minimum set for "prompt".

Also: Internet Explorer browser > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says:

"Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to *clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser.

I did exactly as you have mentioned in your response but the problem still
persists.
My version of Windows is: Windows 2000 with SP4. The version of IE tjat is
being used on my laptop - 6.0.2800.1106

This is happening on Hotmail.com (login site), sites like cnn.com, cbs.com
etc. Probably on may more as well, but can't really pout down all of them
here.

Also, all the updates from the Windows update site have been downloaded so
no more updates are actually required, either for Windows, or IE or Office

Let me know if you need anymore details.

Does this pc have a firewall? If so, check to see that the Internet Explorer program is allowed access to the internet.

Select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter>
IPCONFIG <enter>

Let's see if you can see your IP address. If so, do a
PING www.cnn.com

With both working, you can tell that indeed your are connected & can address out.
Next, focus on what could be blocking your IE browser.

Take an inventory of all your startup programs. You may go to www.dougknox.com and download Doug's Startup tracker.
Minimize your startups to the barebones.

Have you selected to turn on the Status bar in I.E. browser? If so, you should be able to get some sense of the browser's actions.
You may also try resetting IE to its standard defaults.

And btw, make very sure you have not turned off some Windows Services.

Do some searching / reading at the IE6 newsgroup.
These links are for your newsreader / Outlook Express.
