Hi!

I'm not sure what you mean by your question BUT I believe I have been
soundly "spoofed". I think I've been caught by a VERY sophisticated con!

I now have the following updates installed on my PC (according to Windows
Upate "Review your update history"):-

(all KB numbers) 896688 902400 899589 900725 901017 905749 905414 904706
and, to top it all (!) Malicious Software removal tool 890706.

I have used System Restore to "wind back the clock" and then searched
Microsoft for these KB numbers - THEY APPEAR NOT TO EXIST!

I try to be careful - not quite sure how this has occured! Ilook forward to
learning if anyone can throw any light on this and hearing of others
experiences.

If you do a search on the Microsoft site - you will not find the article (at
the moment). If you do a search through Google - you will find that
Microsoft had links to the articles - but now they don't. Not sure why we
cannot access the articles.

I encountered the problem while trying to perform a Microsoft Update. You
also cannot download it through the catalog. The item was posted today.

Hi;

You have not been spoofed. These are the MS Updates released today (11
Oct 05). The corresponding KB articles may not be "live" yet as it
takes a day or 3 for those to propagate out to the world. If you had
checked closer you would have found that the MS Security Bulletins for
those items do already exist.

I highly recommend you return to Microsoft Update and get those updates
installed once again on your system. And next time check first, panic
later. <G>

I've just fed a long message to MS via the Office feedback site to ask that
someone at MS review this web site:-

http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us

It look like the real thing - but if you proceed as normal, you end up with
the 9 updates - just ready to install!

This is really nasty!

I've also just received an email with this as the heading:-

************************************************** **********
Title: Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for October 2005
Issued: October 11, 2005
Version Number: 1.0
Bulletin: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54789
************************************************** **********

I suspect someone is trying to spoil the (good) name of Microsoft!

I await other comments and guidance!

You are right James!

This is the answer I received from Google:-

"Your search - KB896688 - did not match any documents"

I'm afraid I am always sceptical - I was totally unaware that Updates are
always issued on the second Tuesday of the month (as someone else has
mentioned). I'm fairly confident that I've often received Updates at other
times.

I just hope you are correct Sky - you SOUND absolutely confident!

The Updates appear to be installed anyway, even though I had used System
Restore to back-peddle!

I certainly didn't panic - I'm just cautious; I've recently been a victim of
"stollen identity" and it took nearly six months to get my money back from
PayPal!

Cheers!

Boater,
Try a search at Microsoft for "Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for
October, 2005" - you will find "Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for
October, 2004" - go there - back up to "BULLETINS" (general location) and
you will find assurance. Index at Microsoft for searching Microsoft seems to
be a bit behind. Maybe we should ask BOB to do it.

Hi;

You may indeed have received updates at other times. If MS determines
that an issue requires immediate user attention they will release the
update outside the normal monthly cycle.
