IE SP1 from JANUARY trouble

I'm reinstalling Windows XP Home. Windows Update says I need to install
KB918439, which is a cumulative update for Internet Explorer SP1, first
offered in January 2007. When I try to install, I get a message that it
isn't needed because the components are from a later date.

I have already installed the IE Cumulative Update from June 2007.

Do I need something from the January update? If so, how do I get what I
need? (A life-long question, perhaps?)

If I don't need it, how do I stop it from being reoffered?

Thank you.

Hello LD,

I'm not sure why you are trying to install anything related to SP1.

You can install SP2 directly -- it's not required that SP1 be on your PC
before SP2 can be installed. And unless XP is at SP2, I'm pretty certain
that Windows Updates will require that it be installed before it does any
other update checking.

Once you're at the SP2 level, then go to the Windows Update site and
download any other high priority fixes that are indicated.

I do not understand your answer. I have installed Win XP SP2 and am now
installing the post-SP2 updates. To repeat my concern:

I'm sorry, LD. I seem to have misunderstood what you said.

As your starter post mentioned only the reinstallation of XP Home without
reference to any Service Packs, I had thought that you were concerned about
installing something related to SP1 without realizing that you DID, in fact,
already install SP2.

Right now, I'm unable to get into the Windows Update site. I'm back in the
mode where I am informed: "Get the latest Windows Update software. We've made
improvements to our website. To download the new version of the software and
begin using Windows Update, please click Install Now."

But I know from experience that -- although I DO already have the new
software -- if I tell it to Install Now, I'll get an error message. It
comes...and goes...and comes...goes... But I'm a patient man.

However, my recollection is that if you click on the show details part of an
update there is a box that says "Do not show me this again" or some words to
that effect. If you put a tick mark there, you shouldn't be offered that
update in the future.

Thank you Alan. Before I make the update offer disappear, I'd like to know
whether it's being offered because there's something in there that I need,
or whether it's being offered as a glitch.

I think the SP1/SP2 confusion came from me referencing IE SP1 right after
referencing XP Home (without mentioning service packs).

I'm sorry you're having trouble getting to Windows Updates -- it's
frustrating, but you sound like you can roll with the punches. Good luck!

Ehm, KB918439 is *not* an Cumulative Update for IE, but an additional
one (not only for IE) reflecting security holes in (AOL)ART picture
files. And no, it's dated on June 200*6*. See also the according Security
Bulletin MS06-022 for details:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-022.mspx

Since you seem to be on Windows XP SP2, here's where you can download
the update manually:

Ottmar,
You are so right! My mistake. But I still need to know what to do, and
why. WU keeps telling me to install KB918439. When I try to install it, I
get this message:

Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this syst4em i snewer
than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update.

Also, my shortcuts have stopped working. And my keyboardd shortcuts, like
Control+V, have stopped working. I did a System Restore to apoint from last
night, when everything was fine. But it didn't fix my shortcuts. Can you
help wth that, too, please?

I would download KB918439 manually and install it afterwards. If you
still get the error message, have a look into the "KB918439.log" file
to be found in the "Windows" folder. The last 30-50 lines should be
enough for those interessted in helping you.

That's nothing specific related to any Windows update.

That's what I've been doing. It's downloaded to HD. Then I go offline,
close AV, and try to install. No joy.
