I just did a clean install due to some new hardware and my IE is stuck on
that first page that lets you set preferences.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277
It went there once, I tried to make choices and go on but it hung. It just
keeps going to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 and erroring out
with "Page cannot be displayed." I have set my homepage to MSN.com and if I
click home it goes there biut it opens everytime to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 and erroring out with "Page
cannot be displayed."

Thanks for any help and suggestions,
Sam

You must finish what settings you want before this page goes away, such as
default search in Internet Explorer+ etc..
If that hangs when you do that you need to search for that error instead,
try to start Internet Explorer withoyut extensions
iexplore.exe -extoff

Which version of Vista do you run?

Open Internet Options. In the home page box is the
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 listed along with your MSN.com
page. If so remove the link to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277
and then click OK

I am on Vista Ultimate 64 and it happens in IE and IE64. I remember the no
extensions in XP but I can't seem to find ithere in Vista. I only have Flash
but that's worth a try. It loaded once and would nhot go past the first page.

Tools | Internet Options | Security
Make sure scripting is not disabled.

If that doesn't fix it, save the part between the lines below and paste into
Notepad. Save as Runonce.reg

---------------------Runonce.reg--------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"RunOnceHasShown"=dword:00000001
"RunOnceComplete"=dword:00000001

-----------------------------------------------------

Right click Runonce.reg and choose Merge.

To change all Windows users at once use

---------------------Runonce2.reg--------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"RunOnceHasShown"=dword:00000001
"RunOnceComplete"=dword:00000001

-----------------------------------------------------

If, like me, you've go stuck with this problem and have been trying the various registry hacks etc and internet explorer options and none of them are working then this might help... I noticed that the user had removed Norton Internet Security but it seemed that it hadn't uninstalled properly/completely. I downloaded the Norton removal tool from the Symantec website and ran it to tidy up the mess that had been left behind and sure enough, after a restart the IE problem had gone away. I'm guessing that maybe something to do with Norton still had some claws into home page protection or something along those lines. Anyway, whatever the reason it worked, so I hope this helps somebody.

WHAT problem? I don't know what forum this is (NNTP-Posting-Host:

totally orphaned posts like this.
