While the headings in Internet Explorer pages are okay, the main text on
news pages is very faint and places a strain on the eyes. I can adjust the
size of fonts but is there any way I can choose the sharpness and contrast
of text displayed?

ClearType in Internet Explorer 7:

13. IE7 enables 'clear type'. If you don't like it, turn it off via Tools,
Internet Options, Advanced, Multimedia tab.
There is a bug where ClearType continues to affect OE even when disabled -
fix (cite: dfrey1969 in the internetexplorer.general newsgroup)
Navigate to key:
HKCU\Identities\{56561DBF-E736-4516-B63E-80BB99D3E6AD}\Software\Microsoft\Ou
tlook Express\5.0\Trident\Main\
Create STRING UseClearType if it does not exist. Set value to no.

Hope this helps

"Create STRING UseClearType if it does not exist. Set value to no"
Does NOT work or make any difference at all.
Cleartype is still enabled in Outlook Express.

Yes, it does, provided you realize that the above is an *example*
and that you are expected to "navigate" through your own "placeholder"
GUID. ; )

Presumably if you have more than one Identity you would have
to do this for each GUID (otherwise somehow know which one
you were currently using.)

Also know that OE must be recycled for this change to take effect.
E.g. verify with Task Manager that msimn.exe is not running
before reopening OE again.

You did disable it using the GUI menu option first, yes?

The email address I use for newsgroups is a spam trap and does not get read.
