I attempted to download and install IE 7.0, but contiually get installation
failure code 0x05. I am downloading from the windows update site. I have a
Compaq Presario, Athlon 64, running XP. Before beginning install, I shut down
Zone Alarm, anti virus, messenger, etc. to allow more resources to be
commited to updates. This is the first time I have encountered problems
getting updates.

Hi,

You need to uninstall ZoneAlarm, not just shut it down.

Thank you

I have the same problem. I looked in MSN and Internet - Internet Explorer -
General discussions (there is a group for IE5.x and IE6 but of course nothing
for IE7 - HELLO MICROSOFT - WE NEED A GROUP FOR IE7 !!!).

There was one hit for 0x05 (if you search for "IE7 0x05", you don't find it,
because the title is "IE 7 0x05" - clearly the search engine is crap).

I have Avast antivirus (free edition) and Webroot Spysweeper.

How about if you don't have Zone Alarm.

Getting the same error, but I cannot install.

Yes. This is exaclty my own experience. I have two PCs. One has ZA Pro and
the other has the full ZL Security Suite. On the first PC (the one having
only the ZA Pro firewall) IE7 installed OK. The second PC returned the 0x05
error. Turning off ZL Security did not help. I uninstalled ZL Suite and
then IE7 installed properly. A bit of a pain for the present, but hopefully
ZL will release an update patch.

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Release Notes
http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/releasenotes/default.aspx

Sandi's notes on "IE7 Gold", including Installation Tips <=READ THIS!
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks...18/182724.aspx

IEBlog : IE7 Installation and Anti-Malware Applications
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...lications.aspx

Those using IE7 are asked to post their comments & questions to and seek
support in microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general newsgroup.

On the web:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...plorer.general
