(I'm running XP Home SP2 with IE6.)

While accessing the netflix.com and blockbuster.com websites with several
windows open, I encountered a fatal error: "Internet Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close...". This is rare for me. My IE6
has been rock solid for the last 6+ months.

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
pngfilt.dll, version 6.0.2900.3121, fault address 0x000049b5.

After a little research, I see that I have about a dozen copies of
pngfilt.dll in different versions in the MS update folders dating back to a
2002 version (6.0.2800.1106). It has been involved in a malware exploit, I
believe, perhaps other problems. My current active version of pngfilt.dll
(6.0.2900.3121) came in MS Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
6 for Windows XP (KB933566) which I installed on June 12, 2007.

Is this a known problem with the latest version of the file/MS update?

If the fatal IE6 error becomes bothersome, my notion is to revert to the
last prior version of pngfilt.dll which is stored in my MS update folder for
May 8, 2007. Is that a reasonable idea?

Please don't multi-post. IE6 Browser was the correct newsgroup for this.

Sorry. I don't visit the MS NGs regularly and have no way of knowing which
one is the correct place to post. This problem involves IE6 as well as
possibly the MS updates, so either place seemed OK. To improve chances of a
response, I posted it both places.

If you must make identical posts to multiple newsgroups, please cross-post
one (1) message to all of them. Thank you.

The point is that instead of multi-posting (posting the same question
separately in more than one newsgroup) you should cross-post
(post the same question once in the same set of newsgroups.)
Then if you do get comments from more than one newsgroup,
readers in all newsgroups will be aware of all responses.
Also, sometimes as a courtesy responders in the WU NG would attempt
to reply to your off-topic question there as if they were in fact answering
in the IE NG. If they were aware of the cross-post they would more likely
let someone in the IE NG make that reply or, if they did reply, they could
then feel more comfortable just making remarks about how your question
had any relation to WU. Etc.

FYI

Gotcha! I had never encountered the multi- vs cross-posting issue before.
Live 'n learn!
