I had to reinstall XP pro sp2 and am having a couple of problems--maybe
related.

When I try to access the windows update site at microsoft, IE6 hangs and I
have to ctl-alt-del to close it. I am unable to set automatic updates in the
security center, it tells me to try and set updates through the systems tab.
If I do that I get the error message:

An exception occured while trying to run
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL"C: \WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cpl",System"

Also, in checking the error event log, I came across these errors:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager

I hope these are related and can be fixed easily. I have searched for
possible fixes and can't seem to find any. I have run virus scans (AVG,
AdAware, SpyBOT) with no problems. HiJack This shows no abnormal items.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Clean install after a failed repair install. The clean install also included
scanning the disk and format. I am using zone alarm (tried to update even
with it off). I am now getting spurious 'comctl32.dll' errors in IE6. I have
tried various solutions to reinstall IE6, but to no joy. The SSDP and HTTP
errrors seem to have gone away for now, but IE6 still hangs and sometimes
crashes at the update site with a 'comctl32.dll' or 'mshtml.dll' error. I
have run 'sfc /scannow' and no problems were detected.

FOUND THE PROBLEM?

After receiving other various errors, I knew XP couldn't have been that
screwed up. I forgot I had Windows Memory Checker on disk, so I ran it. One
of my 256MB RAM sticks gave up the ghost. I pulled it out of my system, and
now everything seems to be fine. Time to file a warranty claim.
