IE6 hijacked - will not go beyond open URL

Win XP Home SP3
512 MB RAM
2 x 2.6 GHz
IE6
Dell Dimension 4600C
Kaspersky AV Suite

Situation:

When launching IE6, I get home page. When opening next URL this is the
behavior:
New window launches & flickers like a changing a TV channel. Two windows
are open and the new window keeps re-cycling to blank screen then
try to open theURL.

I left running for some hours and got this error message: "There is not
enough free memory to run program. Quit one or more programs and
then try again"

System was very non-responsive to clicks & launch of programs; minutes
between click & open of window. Disk light very slow.

This system was highly infected -
Malwarebytes found 350+
Spy Hunter 60+

I ran chkdsk to clean up Hard boot (Power button)
Disk defrag check is OK

To retore responsiveness I re-installed WinXP SP2 (restore option) and moved
to SP3. The system is now normally responsive (no long wait times to launch
programs). This is when the IE6 behaviour started. I cannot get to windows
update to apply any post SP3 fixes.

I tried to install IE7 but it failed. I also tried a re-install of IE6 via
KB 257249.

How can I clear the IE6 issues to have this system working again?

THX

Malwarebytes found 350+... /what/? 350 tracking cookies? 350 infections?

If your computer is severely infected, don't waste your time trying to
repair it. You'll have to erase your hard disk and start from scratch.

It's possible Kaspersky is causing your problem.

Try replacing Kaspersky with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender.

BTW Posting your real email address is an invitation to be inundated with
SPAM.

They can send SPAM® electronically? I always thought it had to be shipped
via something like UPS, or USPS, or FedEx!

{"SPAM" is a registered trademark of Hormel Foods, and specifically applies
to their tinned meat product. Unsolicited Bulk Email is actually just,
"spam".}

Thanks for all your prompt help. This machine was so heavily infected (> 700
torjans & viruses) that I will use the Dell estore disk to wipe clean.

Wiping clean is necessary in your case, but more important is to learn
how to avoid getting infected in the first place. Unfortunately, that is
not an easy task. There are magnificently talented criminals who write
elegant malware to infect your computer.

Anti-malware applications are helpful, make no mistake, but more
important is to adopt a highly suspicious and skeptical attitude while
on the internet, and to exercise almost draconian restraint while surfing.
