There is a registry edit here :
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
that triggers WU to install IE 6. It is the same key on my 98/ME/XP Pro
systems. Having the value data for the key set to "1" should get Win Up
to recognize IE6's installation :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
ValueData " IsInstalled"=1
There are 2 identical keys for 98, the first one shows
(Default)"Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools", the second shows
(Default)"Windows Desktop Update" . There is only one key for XP Pro -
(Default)"Internet Explorer 6".
Editing the value to "IsInstalled"=0 causes Win Up to prompt to install,
as stated in the KB article.
