Anyone seen this or similar??

Clean install of XP Home SP2.
Copy Activated

Go to the update web site (windowsupdate/v6/ etc) and install initial updates.

Subsequently on returning to Update and clicking either Custom or Express
button, the button goes grey, hour glass comes up, Desktop stops refreshing.
Ctrl-ALt-Del has no effect.

If I start Task Manager before doing this, all applications are shown as
"Not responding, and Processes show the system as 99% idle with occasional
activity from explorer. Changing tabs on Task Manager evetually shows it as
not responding too.

Should I start the install again??

"Clean install of XP Home SP2" might mean that you have not yet installed
any hardware-specific driver updates.

What motherboard chipset does this PC have? (for instance, nVidia nForce?
Intel? Via?).

Install the latest motherboard chipset drivers direct from the
manufacturer's support site.

Report back here what brand of PC, motherboard, chipset, and hard disks you
have.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for responding. This report is the same problem as my earlier
(longer!) thread "W Gen Advantage Notification Tool locks up"

I am re-installing the machine because original machine purchaser had
problems and attempted a re-install without enough skill and did not
understand helpful suggestions from manufacturer over phone [!].

Details you want are:

PC supplied by Watford Aries Carerra in Dec 2005.

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.21GHz 1.00GB RAM with PAE

MB: Winfast (Foxconn) CK804K8MA - CK804M01-K6S (hence nVidia nForce I believe)
BIOS: July 2005 - is the latest on the Foxconn Web-site

Chipset, Audio, LAN drivers installed from MB CD dated 15-Nov-04 which
post-dates or matches dates of latest files downloaded from Foxconn Web site.
I have just installed from those files - the machine still locks up in the
same way. [I see none of those drivers has passed MS driver certification].

Disks: - two Maxtor 6L200M0 200GB SATA drives independently as Drive C & D -
no special drivers installed

Video: XP says Radeon X800GT (primary and secondary)

A video driver was installed from ATI disk that came with machine. According
to WU Update History, WU has updated it with "NVIDIA Corp multimedia
software update realeased on Oct 22 2004". Device Properties - Driver now
shows

Provider: ATI Technologies Inc
Driver Date: 28/06/2005
Driver Version: 6.14.10.6553 (Not digitally signed)

The machine has been stable running for several hours. I watched more than 2
hours of Broadband BBC video in Media Player 10. The only time I have had
lock-ups is with WindowsUpdate as described or when installing KB905474 or by
clicking the Validate button on the Genuine Advantage Website.

WGADiag2 tool believes the copy of XP to be genuine. (The CPU case has the
genuine Windows XP Home OEM (Aries) Key code sticker attached which was used
for the re-install and re-activation).

KB892130 was installed as third update after connecting to WU the first
time. KB905474 is listed next but has "cancelled" against it. I did not
cancel it AFAIK. KB905474 kept reporting that it was available in the systray
and then hanging as above during install. That reporting has now stopped.

Any suggestions you make would be welcome.

You might be suffering from a known conflict between nForce chipsets and
Maxtor SATA hard disks. One of the reported symptoms of this conflict is a
lock-up when you click on either of the buttons in Windows Update.

Maxtor have issued a hard disk firmware update affecting your model of hard
disk, see:
http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/m..._yixV6i&p_lva=

nVidia have updated their nForce chipset drivers. Go directly to
http://www.nvidia.com/ and pick up the latest nForce4 chipset drivers: don't
rely on intermediaries to keep you updated.

Good luck!

Hi Robin,

Installing nForce 4 AMD V 6.70 from October 2005 has got rid of the IE crash
in all places I had found. It also allowed KB905474 to install successfully.
So I'll ignore the SATA drive firmware update which sounds scary!

You said:

Well said, but sometimes it's difficult for the relative novice to
appreciate who is intermediary and who is "the source". It would not have
occurred to me to 'risk' installing MB drivers from other than the MB
"manufacturer" web site (or the PC vendor). It's one big learning curve!
[What did we do before the Internet]

Thanks for you help, Robin - you've earned you keep today.
