IE6 painfully slow after Windows Update

XP SP1 with all hot fixes (not willing to go to sp2 yet)

I updated a laptop today with all the latest hotfixes and after reboting, IE
6 would take forever to launch - 60 seconds or so.

Entering a different url and loading the new web page also takes much longer
now.

Prior to doing Windows Update today, launch time for IE was fine - a couple
seconds at worst.

Firefox launches just fine on the same machine and responds quickly (I've
been doing a side-by-side comparision), so I know that it isn't network
congestion causing the problem.

I run Norton AV, same version as I was using prior to doing the Live
Update.

Note that even if I do things with IE6 that are not 'browser' related, like
simply trying to to open the Tools->Internet Options menus (which are local
to the IE install), it takes15-20 seconds for those menus to open or to
switch between the tabs when they are opened.

None other of my apps (Word, Acrobat, Media Player, etc....) nor does XP
itself exhibit any form of slowdown - just IE6.

Any thoughts as to why IE 6 is taking so long to launch since Windows Update
took control of the machine?

Hi John :-)

You might try the following and see if it helps:

First:

How to Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;260897
Delete view off-line files not the pages File, Save as.

Clearing the TIF Cache -
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

then.....

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections tab
Click on LAN settings and make sure all boxes are unchecked.

also....

Internet Explorer stops responding or the home page takes a long time to
open
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320162

Knowledge Base Links Speed Issues
http://www.aumha.org/win4/kbspeed.php

and you should also do the following:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Hope this helps

Jan,

Thanks for the tips.

I have tried all the things you suggested and then some more - still have
the same problem.

I'm thinking about restoring the system back to a point before the Windows
updates were done. Do you think I will encounter any problems rolling back
to the restore point that existed before the Windows Update was done?

Thanks.

I believe it is advisable to remove the updates in
control panel-software-remove
before you roll back to a restore point.

BTW: you're not alone...

On days like these I feel like suing Microsoft for lost time. Their QC and
the registry are the biggest pieces of sh*t on the planet.

Hi John :-)

You don't need to uninstall SP2 before reinstalling WindowXP, but you will
need to reinstall it afterwards

However, you can just reinstall Internet Explorer from its .inf file first.
Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, set it to "Show
hidden files and
folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files [recommended]".
Also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the ie.inf file, right-click it and choose
install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory). See if
this helps rather than reinstalling everything.

Hope this helps

Linux at home. MS at work. If it weren't for the ignorance of
my employer, I wouldn't be using MS at all.
