IE6 SP1 install fail - not enough disk space

I am trying to install IE6 SP1 on IE6, running on MS 2000 Pro SP4, with
52.9GB of free disk space.

During installation from Windows Update I get a screen asking me to free up
disk space, says it needs 429+ GB. No, that is not an error I typed or a
number I misinterpreted - something is confused and asking for that much disk
space.

Virus definitions are up to date and have been run on all fixed drives.
Several spyware programs say system is clean (AdAware & Spybot).

Downloaded ie6setup.exe and attempted to download rest of install files to
perform true local install, using:

"C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

Selected correct operating system when prompted. Windows update indicates
"setup was unable to download the required components" even though my
internet connection is always on.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ron,

See if anything in this MSKB is applicable :

You Cannot Finish Installing or Upgrading Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303399

If not, try this : create a folder on the Desktop and name it IEBak.
Navigate to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
( you'll need to show hidden files and folders from within Folder
Options, View, in the Control Panel )
Move the contents of Uninstall Information to IEBak.

Now attempt the install of IE6 SP1. (Advise you to temporarily disable
the antivirus program prior to the install. Reenable it when it's
finished. )
If it installs, delete the entire IEBak folder.
If it doesn't, move all of the files back to Uninstall Information.
