Hello - I'm trying to install the IE6 SP1 critical update (Win 98, Win ME)

I seem to be in a loop where it downloads OK into C:\WINDOWS\windows update
setup files then tells me it can't install all components, close apps and run
setup again...I try, but I get the same messages.

I've tried disabling my AV and firewall to download and install but no change.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

remove the files in the update setup folder and try it
again, the files will load back into your computer and
try not to interrupt the download

Thanks, I've tried this and unfortunately no change. Do you have any other
suggestions?

If you have 'hidden files enabled' ... there may be a
folder either called "WU temp" or "Windows Update Setup
folder"

These are folders that are safe to delete

I have hidden files enabled
I deleted the WU Temp contents and Windows update setup folder
Then did a 'download' only from the advanced settings on customised download.
The files downloaded to 'Windows update setup' folder again
I rebooted into safe mode and tried to install again but unfortunately
eactly the same messge....'can't install all components, close apps, run
setup again'

Any other suggestions?

I'm having the same trouble and got it down to unsigned digital signatures
for system driver files. Goto Help and Support, pull down Tools, use
Signature Verification, and you'll see a list of unsigned drivers. I have
125 files unsigned and can't figure that they all are required to be signed,
but goto Device Manager, look at each device's driver and note which ones are
Unsigned....that's where I'm at...

Taking a guess here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303399
You Cannot Finish Installing or Upgrading Internet Explorer
Windows NT, WinMe, Win98 & Win2000
You receive one of the following error messages:
Setup was unable to download all the required components for this installation.
Please try Setup again, and select Resume Setup.
-or-
Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try
running Setup again.
-or-
Setup was unable to download all the required components for this installation.
The computer stops responding (hangs) during the installation.

http://www.computing.net/windowsme/w...rum/41016.html
Have a look through, especially response 4, 5 & 6
I am trying to upgrade Windows ME system from IE 5.5 to IE 6.0. When I download the
file and go to setup for IE6setup, I get an error message stating "Setup was unable
to install all components. Shut down those and reinstall."

I tried the method suggested in response 4 of www.computing.net forum but it
failed. The first 2 times I tried, the system hung and I had to reboot. The
3rd time I received the "Setup was unable to install all components" message.
When I get a chance I will try some of the methods suggested in the
Microsoft article (kbid=303399). Thanks for the information!
