IE7 gives 404 after running updates

Workstation with:
WinXP SP2
When I try to install KB930916 or KB931768 IE7 quits working. Give 404
error. "Diagnose Connection Problem" shows "problem with Winsock provider
catalog... "

I say YES, rebuild the catalog, then allow system to reboot, but the problem
is not fixed. The Diagnose program shows the same problem and and wants to
rebuild again and again.

I uninstalled the updates, and did a system restore. IE7 now works, but
shows pending updates.

I have a half dozen identical DELL Optiplex GX520 workstations. Only one
has this problem.

Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

TIA,
MW

X-post to IE General.

Personally, I wouldn't install KB930916 myself (and have not done so).

Error message in Internet Explorer 7: "Internet Explorer cannot display the
webpage":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926431

Also try:

1. Start > Run > (type in) cmd > [OK]

2. Type in "netsh winsock reset" (w/out the quotes) > [Enter]

3. Reboot.

If still no joy, Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting
your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
