IE7 Installation Failed, now appls. don't start

Tried to update to IE7, but failed; probably because of firewall. Received
message that pointed me to kb917925. I suspect registry problems. Now the
real problem:

Many applications and other functions will not start from an application
centric approach. Many will start using a document centric approach. In all
cases that don't start, my PC is trying to open with acrobat reader.

I tried to restore back to a point prior to tring the IE7 install, but the
control panel option to restore opens with acrobat reader.

This problem seems to be getting worse while I look for enough time to solve
it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS
Marshall

I am having the same problem. With automatic updates turned on, an update
takes place (I cannot tell which because MS programmers know more than me)
which causes a scvhost to fail. At this point no more application
double-clicks work (MS has the patent on double-clicking, you would think it
would work).

At this point I have to turn off the machine, boot to Safe Mode, and Restore
to a previous point prior to the automatic installation. I am in the process
of isolating which is the offending update at this time. I will let you know
what I find.

One symptom I saw was that the Automatic Update tried to install the same
update over and over again. Didn't write down which one it was.

To tell the truth, I am ready to switch to Kubuntu Linux. Simpler easier
safer. The only reason I haven't done that already is that the specialized
hardware in the laptop only has Windows drivers.

Thanks Norm. I'll try the safe mode and restore.

In this case, It was IE7.

You should be able to determine which failed by looking at the log files in
the Windows directory. Look for text files that were created during the time
the updates were being installed.
