One of my PCs is saying that IE7 is no longer my default browser, and
Windows Mail does the same. How can I find out what has hijacked these?

Click the Start orb, then All Programs, then the Default Programs selection.

If I go to Set Default Programs, there is nothing in the list!

I suppose you could look at the file associations settings.

Or, you could search your system for a .htm file. Now you have two choices:
1) right-click and select properties. In the window that pops up you should
see more information, including which program it opens with. To some extent
the icon that's displayed will help identify the program.
2) the brute force method: double-click on the file and see which program
runs to display it.

It runs in IE7, which then says it isn't the default browser!

I've discovered that this is a bug in Nokia Video Manager installer.

To fix it, I saved the following from a working PC, as "NokiaVMFix.reg"

---- INCLUDE TEXT BELOW ----

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications]
"Windows Address Book"="Software\\Clients\\Contacts\\Address
Book\\Capabilities"
"Internet Explorer"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Capabilities"
"Windows Mail (News)"="Software\\Clients\\News\\Windows Mail\\Capabilities"
"Windows Media Player"="Software\\Clients\\Media\\Windows Media
Player\\Capabilities"
"Windows Photo Gallery Viewer"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows Photo
Gallery\\Capabilities"
"Windows Media Center"="Software\\Clients\\Media\\Windows Media
Center\\Capabilities"
"Windows Mail"="Software\\Clients\\Mail\\Windows Mail\\Capabilities"
"Windows Calendar"="Software\\Clients\\Calendar\\Windows
Calendar\\Capabilities"
"Windows Search"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows Search\\Capabilities"
"QuickTime"="SOFTWARE\\Clients\\Media\\QuickTime\\ Capabilities"
"iTunes"="Software\\Clients\\Media\\iTunes\\Capabi lities"
@=""
