IE7 will not display some sites/pages, why?

IE7 on both my laptop and desktop will not load some sites or pages, such as
cnn.com, and the picture link to newgroups on microsoft.com. These are just
two examples. The page will start to load, as evidenced by the progress bar
at the bottom of the page, but the progress bar will disappear, and no new
page appears. I have reset all zones to default levels. What can I do to
fix this? Any help you give will be appreciated.

Windows XP or Vista? (Might or might not matter.)

With the warning that a reset will delete autocomplete data, such as
passwords and you will have to reinstall browser add-ons, work through this

Try clearing the DNS Cache
Start> Run> cmd [enter]
ipconfig /flushdns
Then clear the Temporary Internet Files and restart.

Shut down (power down) everything for a few minutes- modem, router,
computers.

Turn on the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall and
disable your third-party firewall or security suite. See if that program is
causing the problem.

In addition to Don's advice below, make sure that your Java is up to date
here: http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp (Uninstall any old versions
via Control Panel/Add/Remove (Uninstall a Program in Vista)
and that you Adobe Flash/Shockwave Players are up to date:

I scrupulously remove Java and Flash. They aren't needed for CNN, which I
have up right now in IE7.

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. You might have incompatible add-ons:
Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools
and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. Read this

Note that the Reset IE Settings button will delete AutoComplete data (such
as passwords.) Do you have those backed up?

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
