IE7 - opening OE6 links

I get an error sometimes when opening links from an email or newsgroup
posting.

IE7 opens up but replaces the link with this link "res://ieframe/syntax.htm"
and says I am not connected to the internet.

Additional info, I am running OE Quotefix so maybe it is a problem running
them both?

[Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >] Set Program Access and Defaults >
Browser: IE *must* be chosen here if you're running IE7 Beta 2 and want such
links to work.

I have OE-QuoteFix running with IE7 Beta2 without problems or the behavior
you describe, Beck.

HI there, I have it set to Internet Explorer but still the same. The weird
thing is that it is not all links. It might be one in 3 links clicked or
more or less.
Just remember now that I did have the problem when using IE6 aswell before
the upgrade but the error message was different. It was still a syntax
error but a different link was in the address bar.
This is a fresh install of XP Home from last Wednesday, I had the behaviour
with IE6 prior to the fresh install aswell.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

> This is a fresh install of XP Home from last Wednesday...

Did you format & reinstall WinXP or do a Repair Install?

After the "fresh install" of WinXP, did you take care of /everything/ on the
following page before otherwise using the internet (i.e., to browse or check
email)?...

Before You Connect a New Computer to the Internet

The behaviour and history you describe all sound like the symptoms of a
hijackware infection, Beck. (Installing IE7 Beta2 has only complicated
matters.)

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

I did a fresh install as in a brand new XP home and service pack 2 purchased
that day. Full format of both drives (C&D) then installation of XP.
I will do the hijack this check, but I am certain there is nothing nasty
going on with the machine. I still think it is maybe something to do with
quotefix. I will do those tests but I wil also uninstall quotefix and try an
earlier version. I will let you know if there is anything bad going on.

Upon further investigation I now believe the problem is definitely with
Quotefix. When running quotefix, clicking on all the links above that you
posted results in the syntax error. If I load OE6 on its own the links load
correctly.
I will uninstall this quotefix and try an earlier version. Shall report
back.

Seems fixed now. I reinstalled it. Interestingly when I uninstalled it then
reinstalled it, IE7 then decided it was not the default browser. Shall
monitor it and see how it goes over the next few days.

What version of OE-QuoteFix is it? I'm running v1.19.2.0 here and did not
run into the problem you describe. (OT: None of my links for OE-QuoteFix
seem to be working today?)

Users of OE-QuoteFix who are running WinXP SP2 can encounter problems if one
or both of these options is/are enabled:

OE Tools>Options>Security>Download images...

OE Tools>Options>Read>Read all messages in plain text

> ...IE7 then decided it was not the default browser.

That's odd. What alternate browser(s) do you have installed? Which one did
you find checked as the default at [Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >]
Set Program Access and Defaults > Browser?

Looks like it is not fixed after all. Was working okay for a bit then a
short while ago I got the error.
I do also have Opera installed, but Internet Explorer has always been the
default in access defaults.
Not sure whats going on now. I had a look at my hijack this report and
there is nothing out of the ordinary, passed it to a friend who knows abotu
these things and also says there is no trojan or spyware in the report.
There is a post by Chaz in this group "IE7 and outlook express" there is
little information but he cannot get links to work either.

I've replied to Chaz' post just as I did to yours initially: [Control Panel
> Add/Remove Programs >] Set Program Access and Defaults > Browser: IE
