Is IE7 a Problem & Why?

WinXP Pro Sp3, AMD Athlon 64 2800 (running 32 bit)

In last several weeks I have collected some dings and I wonder if they are
related. First, parts of NERO will not load and indicate I need MSXML 4.0
SP2 or higher Core Services but Add/Remove shows I have MSXML 4.0 SP2
(KB927978 & KB936181) + Parser & SDK, and MSXML 6.0 Parser (KB933579). Why?
Second, Facebook cutely indicates that it cannot identify my browser at all
and recommends that I get IE8 (beta). What has happened here?
Third, once in a while the browser just simply disappears. I can get back
to the site and go over exactly what I had been doing and there is no issue.
Hunh?
Fourth, in trying the MS automated troubleshooter, it refused to connect to
MS Help & Support.

If your User-Agent string is wrong the web app could be on the wrong track
and issuing bogus messages because of that.

Another common symptom of a problem with a User-Agent string.

Ditto. Check your User-Agent string and change or repair it if necessary.

How does any of this pertain to Windows Update?

A very bad update several months ago took me a long time to sort out. Since
Update and Help & Support had trouble too I ended up here. I'd be completely
happy to move to a different Community. Which do you recommend?

You can see that that is a corruption of both an MSIE 7.0 and an MSIE 6.0
User-Agent string. Depending on how the web app parses it that could cause
any number of undefined results, including script errors such as the ones you
are seeing.

That makes sense but ... while I'm fairly knowledgeable about things Windows,
this is uncharted territory. Is there a recipe you can point me at that I
can follow to correct the situation? I'd be most obliged.
