Shame that I got no replies on this crucial issue. However, through TechGuys

http://forums.techguy.org) I got a reply that worked, so I will take the
time to let future problem folk know what fixed it.
I went to system tools and opened IE in safe mode. After that it worked
whether in safe mode or not.
