IE7 won't work after installing several hotfixes

I'm not sure if I should post this under WindowsUpdate or under
InternetExplorer. As it seems to be more a problem with WindowsUpdate, I'll
post it here.

The yellow automatic updates icon appeared on my systray and so I clicked on
it. It installed several updates:

KB939653
KB941202
KB933729
KB942571
KB890830

I was then prompted to restart my compu. So I did.

After restarting, whenever I launched IE7, it launched with my usual home
page (Google.ca).
The problem is, whenever I clicked on a link (google search results, or any
link on the google webpage), I got a cannot display page error.
The same problem occurred when I clicked of any of my Favorites links - I
got a cannot display page error.
Note - IE7 had a problem but the rest of my softwares (YMessenger, Skype,
MSOutlook, MSOE, Logmein, etc.) requiring internet connection worked fine.

I tried the Network diagnostics tool and it said that there is a problem in
Winsock. It said it will repair it and then prompted me to restart my
compu. So I did.

I still had the same problem. Tried Network diagnostics again. Same
Winsock problem identified. Repaired (so it said). Restarted. Same
problem.

So, I finally just did a System Restore to a restore point yesterday. Now,
IE7 is working fine again.

The problem is, now the Automatic updates yellow icon is prompting me again
to install those same updates.
How can I install them when doing so results in my IE7 becoming unusable
(for whatever reason)?

Windows version?

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from
Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818

Prime Suspects include ZA (Free and PRO AFAIK), Norton/McAfee anti-virus
and/or Add-ons. Which of these might be installed, Matty?

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818/en-us for hints on the cause.

Just read from earlier posts that it could be KB939653 that's causing the
problem.

There were several suggestions to go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818/en-us.

The resolution posted on that webpage says "To resolve this problem, contact
the vendor of the third-party security program for an update. If an update
is not available, try reinstalling the third-party security program. After
you reinstall this security program, the updated Windows Internet Explorer 7
files may now be able to access the Internet."

I think I'll forego installing KB939653. It's too much of a bother when
Microsoft expects that users will constantly
uninstall/disable/reinstall/enable antivirus programs (I'm using NOD32)
just to install MS updates.

The update isn't the cause, but the software running in the background,
especially the so called "Security Software" (AV software, 3rd party Per-
sonal Firewall software, Anti-Spy/Mal/Adware software).

Do have read the possible *cause* for the issue there too?
Do you have *any* 3rd party "Security Software" running in the background?

Ehm, you may whish to contact Esent, the vendor of NOD32 instead to fix
the possible issue - although I doubt that NOD32 is causing the issue on
your end. 3rd party Personal Firewall Software running is my favorite,
followed by Anti-Spy/Mal/Adware software running in the background for
causing the issue. They are blocking the new version of iexplore.exe
contained in *every* Cumulative Update for IE7 from accessing "the net".
That's plain stupid and should be fixed by the vendors of the "Security
Software".

In any case, in front of deciding to ignore an offered critical update,
make sure you're informing yourself about the security holes (and possi-
ble workarounds) mentioned in the corresponding Security Bulletin:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS07-057.mspx

I do not have a third party firewall software.
I run anti-spy/mal/adware softwares on demand. I do not run them in the
background.

The cumulative IE7 update came out much much later than the antivirus
softwares already installed in people's computers. Shouldn't MS be coming
out with updates that fit into what's already existing instead of expecting
existing softwares (and users to switch to softwares that don't conflict
with the updates) to adapt to the new IE7 updates?

Hi Matty,

The update that causes the problem is KB939653. If you follow the
instructions and references given in my post 'Updating Windows Vista' also in
this newsgroup (dated 10/140/2007), you should be able to solve your problem.
This, of course, assumes that you are running Vista.

Okay, to shorten the story:

*Which* software is running *exactly*?
*Which* Anti-Spy/Mal/Adware do you have installed *exactly*?
And you're still asking for Windows XP SP2, on which you where *still*
unable to install the lastest OE Cumulative Update and the newly released
Security Update for OE under Windows XP SP2, right?

Nope. You've decided to install IE7, right? The AV software (or whatever
"Security Software" is running/installed) shouldn't have any effect on the
contents of a Windows update, right?

Although some "Security Software" vendors are creating and releasing
application that seem to compatible only to themself and seem to be tested on
a Windows version which isn't yet released nor developed, it's still the
"Security Software" (vendors) which should make sure, that essential updates
for Windows aren't blocked by accident. It's IMHO not on MS to dance after
the pipe of "Security" or any mor or less broken application installed on
their OS, it's the other way around.

Anyhow, that doesn't solve the problem you've ran into (once again). So
please be so kind to simply answer the questions in case you're searching for
help from other users. If you want to contact MS, please do so by
calling/mailing them directly.

Bye,
Freudi
