IE8 (and earlier) Freezes occasionally

XP Media Center Edition

Occasionally, IE freezes. We can fix the freeze by opening a new tab. Then
the frozen tab finishes loading and everything is normal. This has been
going on ever since we have owned this Toshiba laptop (including all earlier
versions of IE from circa 2006.)

Any clue as to what is wrong?

"This has been going on ever since we have owned this Toshiba laptop..."

You mean this happened from the very first time you started your
computer? In that case, you have a warranty issue with Toshiba. Toshiba
owes you a computer that works properly.

Otherwise, you need to ask yourself: What might I have done that caused
this problem to happen? Here's some generic troubleshooting that
encompasses the most common causes of trouble for Internet Explorer:

Do you have the same experience when you start Internet Explorer from
the 'no add-ons' icon?

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
(No Add-Ons)

Do you have the same experience after you have reset Internet Explorer
settings?

"How to Reset Internet Explorer Settings"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Problems with Internet Explorer can also be caused by by malicious
software ('malware') that you have unwittingly installed on your computer.

The clue I was hoping would help is that opening a new tab unlocks the stuck
tab.

I tried but it is impossible to get support help when the issue is
intermittent. You get a suggestion that you try for a few days until you
discover it makes no difference. Then you get another suggestion...

We use Firefox except when we have to use IE for some websites.

I just reinstalled to factory image. Then applied all windows and IE
updates. Then I reinstalled my applications: AVG, OO, Firefox, Adobe Reader,
Updated Windows Media Player. The identical applications on my desktop do
not cause any issues with IE.

The issue has something to do I am convinced with the crapware that Toshiba
installs with the factory image.

Yes, I have tried this. I will try it again.

Can addons hide themselves?
Which of the following should I disable?

These are the addons that are enabled:

This seems unlikely. I install the same applications on my desktop without
any issues with IE.

Sounds like a problem with networking. So your second tab just wakes
up the other side. There is probably a timeout for the first tab if you
waited long enough for it to be retried that way. You could use WireShark
to capture the network activity which would prove that the hold up was not
on your side. Monitoring with Fiddler2 could give you a different perspective
of your symptom at the HTTP level.

Good luck
