IE8 and PDF links

Since upgrading to IE8 (running on Vista Home Premium, 64-bit, SP2), if I
click on a link for a pdf document, I get the error message "Internet
Explorer cannot display the webpage" and suggests I "Diagnose Connection
Problem." If I click on Diagnose Connection Problem, it says Windows can
find no problem with the network connection.

In fact, if I right-click on the link and select "save target as," I can
save the file to my desktop, Idouble click it there, and it opens as a PDF
just fine. I'm using Adobe Reader 9.

I'm sure there is some setting in IE8 that allows PDFs to be opened on the
fly if the link is clicked. I just can't find it. With IE7 I could always
click a PDF link and it would open in IE.

Anyone have some thoughts on what I could try? Appreciate any suggestions.

Tom

Hello,

Try running IE8 with add-ons disabled.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
Add-ons) to start IE8 without any add-ons. Try using the browser and see if
the same problem arises.

If the problem does not occur again, start IE8 normally, go to Tools (if the
menu bar does not appear, hit the Alt key on the keyboard) > Manage Add-ons.
Disable all the add-ons under 'Toolbars and Extensions'. Enable each add-on
one at each time and see if the problem occurs again. Once it occurs again
after enabling an add-on, you have nailed the culprit.

Most likely the culprit is "Adobe PDF Link Helper". You may want to try
disabling that first.

In addition to running IE without addons, make sure you have the latest
version of Acrobat Reader and that in its preferences/Internet, the box
displayPDF in browser is checked (also the other 2 boxes on that page).

Firstly, thank you for your suggestion.

I used the IE8-No Addons, but got the same problem when clicking on a link
to a PDF. Just for the heck of it, I restarted IE8 normally, and disabled
Adobe PDF Link Helper. It still didn't solve the problem. But thank you for
the good ideas.

Thank you for your help. I'm running Acrobat Viewer 9.1.2, which appears to
be the latest version. I checked the preferences section for Internet, and
all three boxes are checked.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader?

Do you have a publicly accessible link so that others can test it?

Good luck,

Donald:
I'm embarassed to say that worked! Thank you, and the others, so much for
your suggestions. Guess sometimes the simplest solution is the best.

AR wants to manage its file types and associations itself
so the least you may have to do when they stop working
is use its Repair tool (via Add/Remove Programs).

There has been an update to Adobe Acrobat 9, run the Updater
in Acrobat Reader, Help - Update.
