IE8 and Windows Explorer

The other day, I was prompted to update to IE8 (the finished version, not the
beta.)

I went ahead and updated. It seems to work okay.

Only now, when I use any file manager (Windows Explorer, PowerDesk 7) and
right click on any file, they always crash.

I uninstalled IE8, and it is still the same probmem. Something changed, and
uninstalling IE8 didn't help.

Was wondering if anybody else has had this problem.

The problem may well not be with IE8.

I'm having the same problem all of a sudden and I'm have not installed
IE8. One common element you and I have is that I'm (or I was) using
PowerDesk7 as my file manager.

I first noticed the crash on right click a few days ago. I tried
using the Windows file manager (formerly MyComputer) and had the exact
same problem. I decided that PD7 must have become corrupted and
reinstalled. No change.

As another test I just uninstalled PD7 and tried right clicking in
Windows Explorer. Now right click worked as it should with no
crashes. So, you might try uninstalling PD7 and see if that makes any
difference with and without IE8.

I'm now testing replacement file managers. So far FreeCommander and
xplorer2 and working as expected without crashing on right click.

Please state your current IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP
SP3; Vista SP1) when posting to this and other MS public newsgroups.

If uninstalling IE8 Final did not resolve the problem, one suspects that
installing it didn't cause it either.

Did you upgrade to IE8 Final from an IE8 beta build?

You were right. I uninstalled PowerDesk 7, and now Windows Explorer right
click works. I am going to have to write them and see what they say.

Hey Bob. I wrote to the PowerDesk guys and they have a patch to fix the
problem. You can keep using your PowerDesk. Here is what they said:

An update is available that will correct this issue.
To install the update:
1. Click on the link below to download the patch. Save the file to your
desktop.
http://kbts.novadevelopment.com/util...e.aspx?rid=242
2. Once downloaded, double-click on the file to launch the extraction
wizard. On Windows Vista, depending on your setup, you may need to run the
patch with Administrator priviledges. To do so, please right-click on the
patch file and select "Run As Administrator" from the context menu.
3. When the installation wizard appears, click through the wizard and
select the location of your PowerDesk installation directory. For most
customers, this will be the default location which appears.
4. When you click Finish to the wizard, the update will make a copy of
the old PowerDesk context menu .dll and copy over the new fixed version. You
may see a quick DOS command-prompt window appear and disappear. This is
normal.
5. When you have completed running the update, you must reboot your
machine for the change to take affect.
How to verify the corrected files are in place:
In your PowerDesk installation directory, you should find several new files:
* ContextMenu.bat
* PDShExt.new
* PDShExt.orig
After that patch is run, the timestamp of the file "PDShExt.dll" should
match that on the file "PDShExt.new". You should also find that the
timestamp on the file "PDShExt.orig" should be earlier than those files.

Of course, you will have to re-install PowerDesk and remember your license #.

Thanks for the information. Must have been something that MS "fixed"
on one of their updates.
