IE8 Bug?

WinXP Pro, SP3, all patches.
After installing IE8 cannot start a search from Start Menu.
It means: Start Menu - Search - On The Internet...
Click on 'On The Internet...', nothing happens.

I think it is bug.

I have Windows XP Pro SP-3 installed in a virtual machine. It is still
using Internet Explorer 7. IE8 was never installed in this virtual machine
(i.e., IE8 was not installed and then reverted back to IE7). The "Start ->
Search -> On the Internet" doesn't work there. So it appears not to be an
IE8 issue. In the virtual machine, only Windows XP Pro was installed along
with SP-3 and all updates. So it is likely that some update killed this
feature. I've never used this search handler so I can't tell you when
Microsoft voided it.

Open Windows Explorer. Click on the Search button in the toolbar. Notice a
link to "Internet" is shown at the bottom. Clicking on it also does
nothing.

The following registry key defines the search handlers available to Windows
and those that are listed under the Start -> Search menu:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FindExtensions

For example, I have Office 2003 and it added a search handler named "Using
Microsoft Outlook ..." under the Start -> Search menu. This registers the
class ID used to define this search handler. I can also see this using
Nirsoft's Shell Extension Viewer where it is shown as a search handler with
name "Outlook Finder Stub", description of "Outlook Shell Hook for
Start/Find", and which uses methods defined in OLKFSTUB.DLL. In this same
Nirsoft utility, and also after searching through the registry, and also
checking the above registry key, there is no search handler defined for the
"On the Internet". That's why nothing happens when you click on it.

I already checked registry key what you gave me.

I installed on another drive XP pro, after that SP3, 'On The Internet...'
works.
After that I installed IE8, 'On The Internet...' does not work. I checked
registry key what you gave me, same as before IE8 is installed. There is
WebSearch and it uses %SystemRoot%\system32\browseui.dll, if I understand how
it works.

So, I still think some is wrong after IE8 is installed.

since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows

Sir, I said in previous post that I installed clean installation on another
drive to check it before and after installing IE8. Nothing else is installed,
just XP pro, sp3 and ie8. You can see it in previous post.

And yet, in my virtual machine, IE8 has *never* been installed (in the
baseline snapshot that allows me to start with a known clean setup). So how
could it be the effect of installing IE8 in a host where IE8 was never
installed?

I missed the WebSearch entry under the FindExtensions registry key. It's
there but I didn't look at its definition. Yep, its default value (to give
it a string name) is "On the Internet". However, mine does say to use
browseui.dll. It says:

Data Item: LocalizedString
Value: @browselc.dll,-13060

I found that file under %windir%\system32. When I inspect its properties,
it says "Internal name: BROWSEUI.DLL". Yet there is a separate browseui.dll
file in my system.

browselc.dll: 62KB
browseui.dll: 999KB

So browselc.dll may simply be a front-end to browseui.dll but I don't know
that for sure, if some method conversion is used, or anything about what
browselc.dll is used for.

browseui.dll was replaced in SP-3 for Windows XP. It became apparent to any
user of the Address Bar toolbar that was available pre-SP3 in the Windows
taskbar. The Address Bar toolbar disappeared in SP-3 (and the fix was to
replace the browseui.dll in SP-3 with one from SP-2). Since I did that
replacement in my non-virtualized (production) host, it may be that the old
browseui.dll doesn't work completely for all its functions with the rest of
SP-3 (it is warned that replacing browseui.dll with an earlier version could
result in loss of some functionality). However, that doesn't explain why
"On the Internet" doesn't work in a virtual machine where SP-3 was applied
and the browseui.dll was NOT replaced with an earlier version (that is, my
non-virtual host has the SP-2 version of browseui.dll while my virtual
machine is using the SP-3 version).

After you had applied SP-3 to Windows XP on your test host, did you make
sure to reboot twice and then test if Start -> Search -> On the Internet
still worked?

Same story with my another PC and PC at work.

Different reasons could be for same problem. But in my case, I test it on
fresh installed XP Pro, SP3. Before IE8, it works fine, after no. Just XP,
SP3 and IE8. Nothing more. Even it is same on my wife's PC at work.
