ie8 changed my desktop icons

After upgrading from ie7 to ie8 all my desktop shortcut icons changed to a
smaller seize but with a large white frame around. I don't like that at all
and would like to keep the previous appearance.

Try going into the Display Properties (right click the desktop, chose
Properties) and set the Themes to Windows Classic and then back to the theme
you want. There is an Appearance tab where you can set Windows Classic also.
Set the Properties to classic, click OK, and see what you have, then set
back to where they were.

I did this to fix the black menu bars, maybe it will fix your Desktop.

Forgot to mention I am using Win7 and can't find "classic" icons anywhere
when right clicking on desktop.

Right-click on desktop, choose "Personalize" and then choose the Windows
Classic theme....

You have to go into the Desktop Properties. Win7 calls this something like
Personalize.
