IE8 continues to run after exiting out of browser

I purchased a new computer running Windows 7 64 bit about 3 weeks ago.

I began to notice that there can be many instances of internet explorer 8
(32 bit version) showing in task manager. These many instances of IE8 show
in the task manager even after I have exited out of all open browsers.

I run spybot and McAfee antivirus.

This seems to cause a problem, when there a quite a few instances showing in
the task manager, IE8 will not open another tab or browser when I click on a
link.

I must go into task manager and end all the instances of IE8 before I can
proceed. IE will work normally after that, until the number of instances
builds up again in task manager. Then I must repeat all this.

Any help or suggestions?

Thank you.

Hi Pear user.

This is occurring because of IE's automatic crash recovery. You have an
incompatible IE Addon installed.

Sometime during your x86 IE sessions you should be seeing the message "IE
has automatically recovered this tab......" or something to that effect.

It does not occur on the x64 version of IE because the x64 version does not
support the x86 Addons.

Ensure you have downloaded and installed the latest versions of any
IEAddons. You can get v6 of the Google toolbar from toolbar.google.com.

To avoid confusion you can go to the Tasks Manager and end all of the
orphaned IE Processes from the Process list to clear up your memory usage.

Are you running Win7 on a wintel machine or your Pear? Possibly drivers may
be involved on a Pear VI.

Regards.

What's the name of the McAfee application (e.g., McAfee Security Center) &
did it come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it?

If you have, e.g., two IE windows open, do you see four instances of
IEXPLORE.EXE in Task Manager? And if you then close those two IE windows &
wait 30-60 seconds, do you find any instances of IEXPLORE.EXE in Task
Manager?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm using McAfee Security Center. It came preinstalled on my Dell. It
seems that there IE8 instances appears to be paired.

When I close all IE8 browsers, the instances remain active in the task
manager ... even when I wait several minutes after closing all browser
windows.

1. How long is the free trial period for McAfee Security Center and do you
plan on purchasing it?

2. Do you see the same behavior if you've only opened instances of IE8
32-bit as well as when you've only opened instances of IE8 64-bit? [If you
haven't tested this yet, please do so now before answering my next
questions.]

3. Do you see the same behavior if you open IE8 (32-bit or 64-bit) in No
Add-ons mode?

=> Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer
(No Add-ons)

4. Do you see the same behavior if you Reset IE8 Advanced settings (RIES)?
(See
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...lorer-settings)

1. Yes, it is a free trial period of McAfee Security Center that came with
the purchase of the computer. I am not certain I will purchase it after the
15 month trial period.

2. I've been using IE8-64 bit more the last few days for sites not
requiring flash plugin. During this time, I have not experienced the same
behavior as IE8-32 bit. 64-bit version seems to terminate normally when I
exit the browser.

3. I was not aware of the "no addin" version. I will try that. However, I
did go through the reset options you mentioned in step 4 below. So far,
IE8-32 bit seems to be working better at this point.

So I will continue to test IE8-32bit with the reset options and see if that
eliminates the issue I've experienced.

One thing to consider is that Internet Explorer is the base for Windows.
Everything Windows does is a variant of the Explorer. Just having Windows
running will generate at least one instance of IEXPLORE.EXE in the Task
Manager. When you open IE, the Task Manager will show additional instances.

Somebody asked about your version of McAfee. I'm not sure, but since
McAfee -- and others -- watch incoming Internet traffic, it should run an
instance of IE in the background.

That's not correct. Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operating
system, but it's not "the base for Windows". Perhaps you're confusing
Internet Explorer with Windows Explorer.

Just having Windows

Also not correct. The process only appears when Internet Explorer is in use.

When you open IE, the Task Manager will show additional instances.

In Internet Explorer 8 that is by design; it's needed for the tab
recovery feature.

Also incorrect. Neither McAfee nor other security software needs to run
IE in the background to do its work.

Well, I'm back to square 1.

IE8 32-bit instances are still running after all browsers have been closed.

Any other thoughts?

Instead of using Task Manager try using Process Explorer to see
if those iexplore.exe tasks are subordinate to some other task.
Then see if the Stacks of each hung task's threads contain any
unusual module references. Those could be interfering with the
successful closure of the tasks. So, then an approach to changing
your symptom would be to try eliminating those references in any
way you could think of.

Good luck
