I installed IE8 last week in an attempt to fix an anoying problem with
CNN.com. The problem is that I can not see the Tech page but once in a about
150 days. Now that I have installed IE8 i get a whit flash on boot up and on
an ocassional program load, but not in IE8. I am running XP and I have 1.5G
of memory. I am not interested in removing IE8 yet. But I would like to know
if there is a fix, I have done a couple hours of searching, The problem is
known but no solution yet. The talk is that Microsoft is not acknoledging the
bug.

There seems to be a notion going around that if someone is having
trouble with a web browser, or with a website, then upgrading to a newer
version of the browser will fix the problem. This is almost never correct.

The list of fixes included in a newer version of software - whether a
web browser or any other application - is described in that version's
release notes or change log, which are typically available from the
software authors' web site. If you don't see your problem listed there,
it's not fixed in the new version.

In any case, you shouldn't expect to see your problem listed at all
unless it has been established that the problem is caused by Internet
Explorer, and that has not been established in your case. For example, I
am viewing the Tech section of CNN's website right now in my copy of IE
8 and it looks just fine; and I have been able to do so consistently in
the past.

This is why we say 'never upgrade over a problem'. Unless you know that
your specific problem is fixed in the upgrade, fix your problems first
and then upgrade.

Your wisest course of action is to remove IE 8 and fix your problem.

The most common cause of trouble with Internet Explorer is incompatible
or damaged browser add-ons. Do you have the same experience when you
start Internet Explorer from the 'no add-ons' icon?

If you have XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)

Do you have the same experience after you have reset Internet Explorer
settings?

Upgrading in hopes of resolving an ongoing problem is seldom a wise idea.
