About three weeks ago (Nov. 25) I reformatted/reinstalled Windows XP SP-3
including IE8. All patches have been applied from Windows Update. I normally
set the browser to keep History pages for 30 days however, it does not want
to co-operate. Seems each week on Monday when the history list should be
transferred to "Last Week", IE will not show the items contained in the
previous week's list. I do have the icon for "Last Week" but, when clicked,
nothing is displayed. Have verified that history items are indeed in the
folder by using a little app called IEHistoryview from nirsoft.net. Last
Monday I tried deleting the History folder from a different profile thinking
that an index.dat file may have been corrupted. That was Dec. 7 and all week
everything was fine until this morning when again I cannot access any sites
from "Last Week". I will certainly appreciate anyone's help with this issue.

Hi Jopa,

OS version and service pack level?

Vista/Win7 have you moved your history folders?

Check the file permissions to your History Folders.

Type shell:history in the IE Address bar to open and display your History
folder in Windows Explorer. This should be the same folder that your user
Account is accessing from IE (not your other Admin account).

Regards.

Thanx for reply...

as mentioned in OP... running Windows XP SP-3 with IE8

Have not moved History - although I have moved TIFF (this is something I've
always done in the past with no issues.)

Security tab is unavailable for this folder. As this is a clean install, I
have no reason to suspect that Administrator accounts would have anything
less than Full Access. Have not messed with group policies or other
permissions.

Yes. This is the same folder as \Documents and Settings\Username\Local
Settings\ which shows two folders, "Last Week" and "Today". . . When
clicking "Last Week" it appears to be empty, although I know the entries are
there as I originally explained by using IEHistoryview. If I click "Today"
folder there is a list of all sites visited today. That's the problem... I
should also get a list of Last Weeks sites when clicking the other folder.
This is the third Monday that I lose this list since the reinstall.

Hi Jop,

I don't know?

Looks like the .dat file is corrupted for the previous week. How could that
happen? CCCleaner should work Ok with XP... I think it reads the .dat
history files.

Do you remember visiting any unusual sites in the last week? viz. in a
different language or did you encounter any tab crashes or Phishing filter
warnings at any sites you visited?

Perhaps... Is your computer time correct? (Control Panel>Date and Time). If
not it may be your cpu battery needs replacing.

Sorry for the vague answers. I don't remember seeing this problem in any
forums, so I am at a bit of a loss. I suppose it will become a big issue for
you if the same thing occurs next week. I would write this off as a one off
(idiopathic - cause unknown) and wait until next week for that history dat
file to be built and to see if it occurs again.

Regards.

OK... As stated in OP, I'm running IE8 on Windows XP SP-3. The problem was
that on a new install, IE would keep History each day, then refuse to show
past History for that week once the transition happened to "Last Week".
Current week, that is per day, continued to behave as expected. What seems
to have worked is *I killed the profile* from a spare administrator account,
then rebuilt the profile. The biggest pain involved was needing to
re-register a number of softwares with their respective serial numbers.
Bottom line is, "It's now Monday again - and I have History for *Last
Week*".

So now, I would like to find, "Where in the registry does this list get
processed"? As a further experiment to track this down, I restored my
registry in midweek from a nightly backup which is done with 3rd party
software. Sure enough, Wednesday's history would no longer display even
though the items were still in the history folder. This would seen to
confirm that the problem was in the CURRENT_USER hive. If anyone can point
me to the location, I'd certainly appreciate it.
