IE8 - History/Temp Internet/Cookies folders now hidden

I have just upgraded from IE6 to IE8. After browsing using IE6, I
would regularly go to the History folder and remove those site entries
which I knew I wouldn`t want to visit again during the week.
Likewise, I would clear up the documents listed in My Computer. Now,
the History, Temporary Internet and Cookies folders are hidden because
they are included in the "protected operating system files". They
weren`t before, so why now, I wonder? I have unchecked the relevant
box in Windows Explorer Tools/Folder Options/View so that these
folders now appear, but that means, of course, that other, probably
more important, files are now visible too. Is there any way that I
can make just these three folders visible again , please?

The correct way to delete TIF, History and Cookies has always been
through the Internet Explorer interface.

Open Internet Explorer and click Safety from the Command bar and select
Delete Browsing History from the menu to open up a page of options. From
here you can choose a number of options. Place check boxes next to the
items you wish to remove and click Delete to cover your tracks.

I agree, but with a caveat.

That method deletes all files of the selected category(ies), and does not
allow Selected Deleting. As a matter of personal preference, I delete all of
the Temporary Internet Files everytime IE closes, but some people may not
want to do that.

What if you want to delete only specific cookies, or only expired cookies?

You could open this folder and look at all the files, deleting what you
want:
C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temp orary Internet Files
This example is Win7, and would also depend on your login name.

Or, you could go to Internet Options/General tab/Browsing
History/Settings/View Files for IE8.

Check out the free program CCleaner from Piriform. It'll clean out temporary
internet files, history, cookies, and more--and it allows you to keep any
cookies you want. I run it before closing down the computer every day.

Quite so. With IE6, I could have the TIF folder emptied when leaving,
but History remained untouched, which was how I liked it. Any cookies
I no longer wanted, I deleted manually, leaving my "Always Allow" ones
intact. I fear that IE8 was a jump too far for me from IE6 : too many
new things to get accustomed to all at once. Some I could see the
sense of and quite liked, but others seemed change for change`s sake -
like making TIF, and History Folder protected operating system files.
As I mentioned earlier, they weren`t in IE6, so why in IE8?

I have now reverted back to IE6 and will probably stay with it until I
am unable to view any webpages at all!

intact. There are checkboxes of the kinds of files you want to retain and
those that you want to go away. I thought you wanted to loose _some_ TIFs
but retain others. That is not possible unless you go into the folder and
selectively delete -- which s a bad idea, by the way.

Click TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS, and in the Browsing History section click the
checkbox, DELETE BROWSING HISTORY ON EXIT, this will open a dialog box where
you select the different categories of files to clean up on exit. You can
delete these files an a random schedule, or on every exit.

It is possible to retain some TIF and not others - any sites added to your
Favourites will have their TIF and cookies retained if you leave the top
option ticked.
