Hi Sctt,
You did not uninstall the GTB from the Add/Remove Programs first?
"I deleted Google Toolbar"
(clicking the [X] on the left hand side of the Google toolbar just disables
it in IE).
If you just 'deleted' the GTB, you may have screwed things up a bit.....
mmm?
Question:
Do you have Firefox installed, and is it running when you try to launch IE?
Do you know what version of the GTB you had previously installed?
Ok....
go
1. Start>Run>msconfig - Startup tab, find and disable "Google Update" AND
(if present) "Gmail" (gnotify.exe).
Close msconfig without a restart.
2. Start>Control Panel>Internet Options - Advanced tab, uncheck "Enable
third-party browser extensions".
General tab, change your homepage to about:blank and remove any secondary
homepage entries.
Security tab, Trusted sites, 'Sites' button, remove any google sites
(*.google.com) from your Trusted sites list.
Close Internet Options.
3. Restart your computer.
When you restart you should be able to run IE (all of your Addons (Browser
Helpers and Toolbars.... types of addons that cause problems in IE) will not
be loaded) without issues. You may like to leave IE like that for a while to
confirm that the above has stopped your issue.
Then at your leisure....
go
4. Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Locate and Uninstall ANY Google
software that you see listed (I think in XP you can sort your Installed
programs by Publisher which will make it easier to identify all of your
Google software)
5. Check the installation folders of your Google software and confirm that
all traces have been removed. (usually \Program Files\Google)
6. Restart your machine.
7. Open msconfig and confirm that the Google Updater and Gmail have been
permanently removed from your Windows startup.
8. Go to google again and download any of their software you want to
re-install (if you did not save the setup files from your last visit)
(I personally really do not like the Gmail notifier as it is buggy (you
cannot disable the auto-login from its options), that is why I have it
disabled in my Win startup.)
9. Before you run the Google software installation programs, go to Internet
Options and check "Enable third-party browser extensions", restart IE (all
instances), otherwise you will receive (incorrect) error messages from the
Google software installers that your Toolbar installation failed.
10. If you included the Gmail notifier you may be prompted to restart your
machine. Do so anyway.
11. On the next machine restart, Open msconfig and disable the GoogleUpdater
and Gmail from the startup list.
12. Restart.
Hopefully you will be a happy Larry.
Of coarse you can just uninstall all your Google software and be done with
it.
You can still use your Google Search Providers and Accelerators in IE8
without the GTB installed.
Sorry for the complexity of my Answer, but darn the G developers.
Regards.
