IE8 will not open web site links

I have cleared everything and reset to default several times. I even used the
software, MicrosoftFixit50195.msi, in case I was overlooking something. I can
click on any link and a window will open, but it remains blank. If another
tab is opened, the activity circle will continuously revolve, but the page is
never opened. I could not even get to this form to submit my question.
Any web site will open as expected. It only seems to be the Hyperlinks, if I
am using the correct term, that refuse to work. I had to get here using
Firefox, which is not the brouser of my choice.
I have talked to Microsoft Support, the one time I could get through, and
the same procedures were suggested that I have already done. I have done a
Registry Clean-up, sfc /scannow and regsvf32 commands, with no success.

Can anyone provide a resolution, please?

What happens when you create a shortcut on your desktop that is a URL to
a web site and then double-click on it? Does the web browser load and
the web site load in it?

Hi,
Windows XP or Vista? (Might or might not be important.)

1. Does the problem persist if all add-ons are disabled?
For troubleshooting information see:

2. Did Microsoft Support have you reset IE settings?
With the warning that a reset will delete autocomplete data, such as
passwords and you will have to reinstall or re-enable browser add-ons, work
through this article:
936213- How to optimize or reset Internet Explorer 7:

3. Did you reregister the DLLs listed in this article?

Hope this helps,

Larry,

I have the same issue. I get around it by first hitting the STOP or Red X
following the URL line. Then when you get the message that "Navigation to the
webpage was canceled". click on the "refresh the page" message and the site
should load.

Hi,

Have any of you tried running in no-Addons mode to determine if it is an
Addons problem.

Blank tabs is an issue of the Google toolbar (v4). Update to v6 at
toolbar.google.com

Other possibilities

- Corrupt userAgent String - test at http://www.enhanceie.com/ua.aspx

- Incorrect Compatibility View Settings.

- Incorrect Security Zone settings (remove any homepages that you have
placed in the Trusted Zone). I recommend that you ALWAYS use the default
security zone settings by pressing the 'Default' button on each of the
Security Zone tabs.

- An excessively long list of Untrusted sites in the IE Security Zones. Are
you using Spybot or Spyware Blaster?

Regards.

I also faced the same problem. After I installed IE 8 through windows update
in my windows vista home basic operating system I could not open any of the
links in e-mail, news feeds, newsletters or elsewhere. Every time I clicked
the links a blank page came up with blue circle going on and on and an error
message "windows cannot find 'link address'. Make sure you typed the name
correctly and then try again" coming up. The linked page, however, opened if
the IE 8 browser was open in any other window when the link was clicked. I
tried various means like disabling third party browser extension, resetting
of advanced options etc. to correct the issue. Though it solved the problem
temporarily for some time the same resurfaced after some time. Being
disgusted I had to unistal IE 8 and revert back to IE 7, which is working
perfectly well. Could it be due to some inherent problem in IE 8?
Shall be grateful if anybody could offer a solution to this.

That would happen also if you started IE using Run...
(e.g. press Win-R and enter

iexplore.exe -nohome

So a possible explanation would be that a filetype open action is wrong
but I don't know what it would be because mine all look like that
and I don't have a problem with IE8:

<cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
E:\>ftype | find /i "nohome"
giffile="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
gopher="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
htmlfile="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
http="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
https="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
ITS FILE="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
MacromediaFlashPaper.MacromediaFlashPaper="F:\Prog ram Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome "%1"
mhtmlfile="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
xslfile="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

E:\>ftype | find /i "iexplore" | find /v "nohome"
ftp="F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" %1
</cmd_output>

So in my case there must be an implicit %L on the end of all of those
and each of them must always have an explicit file to open.

In your case perhaps no file is being appended to the command line,
leaving just the -nohome there and thus resulting in your symptom?
You could Run... ProcMon to confirm this idea and get more clues
for your symptom description.

For a possible repair without further diagnosis to understand what is wrong
you could try this cmd file:

http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=a...133&artlang=en

unconquerable:

You have a different symptom. Probably some kind of connectivity issue.
Running Fiddler2 would be the best diagnostic for your case.
Unless you can produce the same Cancelled message by clicking Stop
before your message you probably should have started your own thread
or at least not added your Me too! to this one which is clearly about a
more specific symptom--in the OP's words:

The only solution I have come up with is to revert to Firefox. I continue to
reset IE8 only to continually have a problem with some links not opening in
a new tab. I am using Visa Home Premium 64bit, but it occurs in Windows 7 RC
and Enterprise also. I haven't found a good explanation though I have heard
many, none worked. It's broke is the best explaination I have heard. I will
take this one at least in a 64bit OS.
