64-bit Windows OSes include both a 32-bit (x86) and a 64-bit (x64)
version of Internet Explorer. It was necessary to do this because a
large number of ActiveX controls currently available are 32-bit, and
will not run in x64 IE. For the same reason, the 32-bit version of IE is
the default. In all other respects, both versions of Internet Explorer
are identical and function equally well.
You don't explain why you believe that task manager "implies that there
are still a number of IE tasks extant".
If you see multiple instances of iexplore.exe in Task Manager, see:
"Multiple Instaneces of iexplore.exe Run When Using Internet Explorer 8"
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/mu...et-explorer-8/
If you are experiencing other problem with either version of Internet
Explorer:
Do you have the same experience when you start Internet Explorer from
the 'no add-ons' icon?
Start > type Internet Explorer in the Start Search box > click Internet
Explorer (No Add-Ons)
Do you have the same experience after you have reset Internet Explorer
settings?
"How to Reset Internet Explorer Settings"

Problems with Internet Explorer can also be caused by by malicious
software ('malware') that you have unwittingly installed on your computer.
Web pages that were developed for previous versions of Internet
Explorer, or with proprietary HTML or scripting extensions, might not
function the same way in Internet Explorer 8.
