Forget about IE8 for now [1] and only concentrate on KB963093 & KB956572.
While you could search your windowsupdate.log for Errors associated with the failed installs of KB963093 & KB956572 (or find the Errors in the Update History section at Windows Update website), you'll be better off opening a free support incident instead. And if you can get KB963093 & KB956572 installed, chances are you'll be able to get IE8 installed [2], too. Start a free Windows Update support incident request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527 For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB963093). Tip: Do NOT mention IE8 failing to install or ask any other questions!! For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through your usual support contacts. ====================== [1] Go to http://windowsupdate.com | Select CUSTOM and scan | Uncheck IE8 and "hide" it for now. [2] If need be, no-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage (only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December 2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain environment. => US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020 => Other locales: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...px?&prid=13043 My personal recommendations include: => Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!! => http://www.microsoft.com/windows/int...ide-sites.aspx NB: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it. When you're prepared to install IE8, double-click on the saved file. => Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live) and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8. => Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before installing or uninstalling IE8. => I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's) before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. => Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8. [Do NOT use System Restore to remove/uninstall IE8; instead, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700. Then use the Restore Point prior to reinstalling IE8 per these recommendations. Norton users will need to see http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html.] => Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8, then check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates offered. => For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide install it. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.net spnorton wrote: > Running XP Pro SP3 with all updates except as listed below. > > Both IE8 and 2 Security updates (KB963093 & KB956572) won't install. The bulk of that log snippet notwithstanding, something's very wrong and has
been for a while if KB952954 (released in Aug-08) hasn't installed yet. (Be sure to mention this to Tech Support!) Moving on, the 0xf201 suggests that your anti-virus application or one or more of your anti-spyware applications may be responsible for all this. See my colleague TaurArian's reply in a related thread from last week: http://groups.google.com/group/micro...97d9d09dfcf1c6 After configuring your anti-virus application per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158, you might try the following: 1. Stop the Automatic Updates service: Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK] Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop (Stopping the service will take a moment) 2. Delete the contents of the Download folder: Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK] Open the Download folder and delete its contents Close the window. 3. Start the Automatic Updates service: Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK] Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start (Starting the service will take a moment) If still no joy, stick with MS Support. -- ~PA Bear spnorton wrote: > Thanks. > I did put in a case yesterday and await a callback... > > I've done some more testing, and now I cannot install ANY updates... > The logs seem similar.... > Here's the log from KB952954 in case something jumps out at you that might > lead me to try some other fix... :-) > > 1.484: 2009/07/20 16:29:30.156 (local) > 1.484: > C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\db250b969 298d4b9909ab53611417a5a\update\update.exe > (version 6.3.13.0) <snip> > 2.000: KB952954 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not > correct.
