IE9 HTML5 - no playback for MPEG4 A/V

IE9 won't playback my MPEG-4 media with HTML5. Plays MP3s
fine in HTML5, and Microsoft's site's HTML5 videos play fine.

My MPEG-4 media is working fine in Safari and Chrome in
HTML5.

MP3 files are fed to the player in the same manner as M4A,
player.src = "file_url";. Tried using the inline src and still no
difference.

What could be going on here?
