If I connect a 1394 external flash disk directly to the 1394 port on my (HP)
machine, after a short while, the drive appears in the devices list. If I
disconnect, it goes away, again, after a short delay. This exactly the same
as an XP system.
If I add an IEEE1394 repeater to the mix, things change. Connect the
repeater to the port and the disk to the repeater, after a while, the device
appears - as before. When I disconnect, the device stays in the device table.
To see if it would time out, I left it in that state over the weekend, the
device was still there Monday morning. The same gear works fine on XP.
It /looks/ like the Vista driver notices the disappearing signal bias when
directly connected, but when indirect, does not notice the software bus reset
sent upstream by the repeater when the repeater detects the loss of bias
downstream.
