My desktop computer has 3.25 GB of ram. I am getting out of memory errors.
Task Manager processes show two instances of iexplore.exe: one @ 284,684 k
and one @ 189,924 k. Only 1 instance of IE 7 with 2 tabs running. Is it ok
to end these processes to free the memory? I want to avoid a reboot. What
is causing this? My computer is up to date with updates.

Does it still do this in no-add ons mode? It sounds like you have a
misbehaving add-on that isn't releasing memory.

Under what circumstances? Often such messages are bogus,
being just the only error message which can be issued in the
unexpected state that a program finds itself in. Another equally
misleading cause of this message is that a caller may have
corrupted the stack causing invalid parameters to be used
that if unchecked actually can't be satisfied by the available
resources; so in that case the message would be valid but
not a significant sign of a resource shortage.

Also, it may help to be more explicit about your symptom description
because another interpretation might be that you are just seeing a
message about your page file size being increased.

Yes but are you now telling us that you can't see an IE window to close
instead? That would be a more significant problem symptom IMO.
