If I rename a file within the Sync folder does it rename it on theirs?

I have a few files in the shared folder that I've renamed so I could put
files with the original files name to replace them - e.g. defaultmemo.doc
(renamed to defaultmemoV1.doc) so that a new one can be put in its place. I
want both docs in the shared folder but want to be able to rename and
replace several.

While my folder is all set - will the other person's folder get updated?

Yes, any changes you make in your shared folder for a contact will
propagate onto your contacts' folder as well.
