I've read through most of the threads concerning problems with Microsoft
Update and tried many of the solutions to no avail. As a last resort I did a
system restore to the day before Microsoft Update V5 was installed on my PC.
I then revisited the Microsoft Update website which caused V5 to be
reinstalled and now seems functional.

How do I do a system restore for XP?

I've been working the issue with MS for over a week, trying all kinds of
things to no avail.

I started out with a different error code, but now have 0x80070424.

David, if you go to start/help/additional resources you can click on system
restore. Then pick a date before Microsoft Update V5 was installed. I used
file c:\windows\windows update.log to pick a date.
