Hi,

I have been trying to get the IIS server working on a PC (not mine) but keep
getting the server error message as shown below, when I point the browser to
http://localhost/

I have installed the IIS in windows features. Not sure what is causing the
error. I have even tried being explicit with the filename inside
inetpub/wwwroot ie http://localhost/iisstart.htm but that does not work
either. Also - I'm not certain what a 'handler' is in this particular
context.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this..... thank you

Jim

Server Error in Application "Default Web Site"

HTTP Error 404.4 - Not Found

Description: The resource you are looking for does not have a handler
associated with it.

Error Code: 0x80070002

Notification: MapRequestHandler

Module: IIS Web Core

Requested URL: http://localhost:80/

Physical Path: C:\inetpub\wwwroot

Logon User: Anonymous

Logon Method: Anonymous

Handler: Not yet determined

Most likely causes:

The file extension for the requested URL does not have a handler configured
to process the request on the Web server.

What you can try:

If the file extension does not have a handler associated with it, add a
handler mapping for the extension.

Verify that the handler associated with the file extension is properly
installed and configured.

Create a tracing rule to track failed requests for this HTTP status code.

Sorry - Home Premium - didn't think it was relevant since the feature is
listed in the windows features box.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi again Peter,

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I'm trying to make sense of your
succinct response. If Vista 'home' and IIS is a no go then it surely begs
the question why is the feature even included in the Windows features to
install? Why is there a wwwroot and an inetpub folder? Were these just
silly mistakes made by Microsoft (dare I suggest)?

Best wishes,

Jim
