Cheers everybody for the quick and very helpful responses.
I've run the repair as suggested in one of the other responses. I've also
run a manual rebuild of the BCD as suggested here:

I also ran the chkdsk /f /r as referred to in the link posted by pooch.
So far I haven't a reoccurrence of the problem so I'm hoping it has been
fixed If not I'll try to restore my system to an earlier restore point as
suggested by one of the other posts.
