IM friends on AIM and Yahoo

What do I or my friends need to do so we can communicate. I am on Windows
Live Messenger V8.1. Most of my friends are either on AIM or YIM. We can
not IM one another. When I double click their name in my contact list, I am
brought to a window to send an email and not an IM.

Windows Live Messenger only works intermittently with YIM, but not at all
with AIM (AFAIK). Best to use an "all-in-one" application, such as GAIM, or
Trillian.
