Here is what happens

When my windows does the automatic updates it fails.
So I will go to the windows update and try installing it by there.. and I
get this message

"Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175) Installation Failed"

Then I will go to the help topics and I get this message

"Installation Failure. Error Code 80070003 .. Try re-installing or visit our
help related links below"

I have never had this problem before nor have I ever had troubles
downloading updates for my windows. I had my little update pop up tonight
saying I needed to download the security update for my windows, sadly it
won't let me do the download.

Does anyone know what's happening here and how I can fix it? According to my
microsoft baseline security analyzer, this is a critical file that needs to
be downloaded.. BUT I CAN'T DOWNLOAD IT.

Somebody please help me!!

Greatly appreciated,
Trish

You receive error message 0x80070003 when you try to update Windows from the Windows
Update Web site

If the above doesn’t assist, suggestion by Torgeir Bakken (MVP)

If the directory "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network" does not
exist, you will get this error.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE% is normally "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users"

To verify existence/create this folder, you can do like this:

Press Start/Run, and fill in this:

"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft"

Press OK, and the Microsoft folder will open.

If no Network folder is found there, create it (File\New --> Folder).

I suspect the meaning of the code is not restricted to the
directory that has been found to be commonly missing.
Therefore, it could easily be another directory missing
(or unavailable to the account being used to write to it).

Search your log files for that code (without the 0x prefix)
and look for the *preceding* context. Others have already posted
excerpts from their ReportingEvents.log which shows that that
diagnostic is too late.

Others have discovered that cleaning up the SoftwareDistribution
directory avoided the problem. In that case you could probably
get better clues than the WindowsUpdate.log gives by monitoring
that directory with FileMon (freeware from SysInternals) while you
repeat a failed attempt.

Can't download it at all, or just not with WU (which involves BITS, etc)?
Have you tried getting it from the catalog instead?

Hello Trish,

I experienced the same problem as you did!
I solved it by installing the update manually. Here are the steps I followed:

Search microsoft.com for KB890175
Choose the appropriate download (in my case, for Windows XP)
Click on the Download button
Save to your computer
Run the downloaded program
And it worked on my computer!

Good luck,
